Liberties and Garageband

Ah, the glory of Garageband! What would us modern musicians do without it?? For that matter, what would all those non-musicians who create tracks and play around at being the professional DJ and producer do without it???? The best and worst thing Apple ever gave to us mere mortals.

That being said, I am delighted that after FIVE YEARS I finally managed to get around to using the USB iMic I bought for my old original iBook…somehow makes it feel like the purchase back in 2005 was worth it!

And what did this ridiculous iMic get used for? Well, first for avoiding recording the sound of my dead fan on my laptop, which was making my recording when I used a regular microphone sound like I had a giant fat tabby cat purring on top of my computer. And second, for making a scratch track of my tune, The Liberties, which is now becoming Track 4 of the Tara Tracks project.

Hooray! Finally! The good and bad of the Liberties is that I have performed it so many times that I know the tunes inside out. The good being knowing the tunes – and the bad. I started orchestrating this set of tunes for the recording back in November…and then…the wall approached. I wrote it, and rewrote it, and rewrote it. One version of the orchestration appeared live on the Tenors’ tour in the States this past December. While we performed that, I reworked it during the hours on the bus. The next version of the orchestration appeared at the concert we did in Omaha at the Bemis Centre. Another appeared at the showcase in NYC. And the next billion versions appeared no where but in my head and on my music stand at home.

I really, truly, didn’t ever think this composition would be finished.
But – !!!! Here it is. Hallelujah! And now my dinky little iMic has been used to record a scratch track in Garageband, and the actual recording of the track is under way. Guess it was a good thing I bought that iMic before the Seven Brides for Seven Brothers tour after all…

On that note, Happy Paddy’s Day to you all!
