Last night we performed in Weert, which is south of our little cabins in the woods.
We got lost driving there – apparently they have changed all the roads around Eindhoven – Incredible, because there was no evidence of roadworks whatsoever. If this were Ireland, there would still be unfinished shoulders on the roads, or left-over piles of dirt, construction rubbish, etc. Clearly when the Dutch do something, they do it very very thoroughly!!! We have a GPS in the car, but it had no idea where we were – it kept telling us we were driving through fields. Once we figured out that we had to ignore the GPS and which road to follow, we eventually made it out of the tangled mess of motorways around Eindhoven and out to Weert.
The theater last night was just beautiful. The entire place had been redone at some point by an interior decorating company – both backstage and front of house. Backstage had the most charming dressing rooms I have ever seen – gilt-edged mirrors and little decorative hooks everywhere for hanging things, plants, rough-hewn wooden tables and benches – so lovely!! The front of house was just as charming with beautiful contemporary chandeliers and plush purple couches and artwork everywhere. When you see a theater like that, you know why the local people are so proud to support it, as was evidenced by our enthusiastic audience last night!
Tonight we are heading back up towards Amsterdam and the sea, to a place called Velsen. I don’t think it is a very long drive, but I expect lots of traffic. Once again it is time to get our things together and hit the road….
